The 2026 World Cup has become a stage for moments that go beyond soccer.
After Argentina’s victory over Cape Verde, a journalist surprised Lionel Messi with a blessed rosary—a touching gesture that quickly captured the attention of social media.
The emotional moment came courtesy of Argentine journalist Julián Pérez Regio, who took advantage of the opportunity to present the Albiceleste captain with a rosary that had been blessed at the Vatican.
As he handed Messi the gift, Pérez Regio explained that he hoped the sacramental would protect both Messi and his family.
“Leo, this little gift is for you. It’s a rosary that was blessed at the Vatican—for you, for your children, for Antonella, for your dad, for your mom. For all the joy you’ve given us over the past 20 years.”Everyone is always asking you for something, always wanting something from you. And that’s understandable. But you’ve been a source of joy for millions of little children from the day they were born, and even for the elderly at the end of their lives.”This rosary is for your protection in everything you do, for you and your family. Wishing you good health, and thank you—from all Argentinians. Thank you.”
