Behind the wild physical comedy and larger-than-life persona that made actor Chris Farley a household name, there was a deeply personal, devout Catholic faith.
On a recent episode of Catholics and Cappuccinos, the comedian’s brother Tom Farley and host Siobhan Fallon Hogan reflected on Chris’ upbringing, his spiritual habits, and his quiet acts of charity, weaving a portrait of a comedian whose faith was at the center of his life, despite his heartbreaking death.
Traditional Roots & Catholic Schooling
Chris grew up in a devout family with values shaped by traditional Catholic ideals. As Fallon Hogan recalled, “We had this model of our parents … not only were they this 1950s’ version, but they were also very Catholic, you know? And so, like, this 1950s’ Catholic image.”
That upbringing involved going to church and serving on the altar, though the Farley brothers couldn’t help but bring their natural mischievousness to Mass.
As Tom explained:
