COMMENTARY: Finding the right person to marry takes more than attraction or shared interests. Catholic wisdom offers a path to discerning a lifelong partnership rooted in faith, virtue and self-giving love.

Wedding celebrations, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners and best-man speeches fill the calendar throughout the year. Amid the joy, many still search earnestly for “the one,” that lifelong companion with whom to walk through all of life’s adventures and ordinary days.

In a culture that often treats relationships like disposable options centered on emotion, Catholic wisdom invites us to something deeper: a discerning, prayerful pursuit of a true vocation.

Marriage is the most consequential journey of your earthly life, and your traveling companion will largely determine its course. The wrong partner can turn even smooth roads miserable. The right one transforms difficulties into shared adventures. Unlike most other major life decisions, this is one you cannot simply walk away from once made. You can quit a job you dislike, move to a new city, find new friends or change careers. Marriage, by God’s design, is for life. It is one decision that is meant to be irrevocable.
