What’s new:
JP2 Radio joins the Catholic community of San Diego in welcoming Bishop-Elect Michael M. Pham, who will be formally installed as the seventh bishop of our diocese on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Why it matters:
Bishop-Elect Pham’s appointment is significant not just because of his background—as the first Vietnamese American to lead a diocese in the United States—but also because of his long-standing pastoral service in San Diego. His familiarity with the local Church and its people brings continuity and a steady hand during this transition.

Context:
-
Bishop-Elect Pham succeeds Cardinal Robert McElroy, now serving in Washington, D.C.
-
He has been serving as diocesan administrator since March and was previously an auxiliary bishop.
His story:
Born in Da Nang, Vietnam, Bishop-Elect Pham came to the U.S. as a refugee at 13. He later earned a degree in aeronautical engineering before discerning a call to the priesthood. Ordained in 1999, he’s served in a variety of roles—parish priest, vocations director, and auxiliary bishop—always rooted in pastoral care and faithfulness to the Church.
Looking ahead:
The installation on July 17 marks the start of his leadership at a time when the Church in Southern California continues to grow and face new challenges. Bishop Pham’s approach is marked by humility and a focus on unity, as reflected in his episcopal motto: “United in Christ.”
What we’re saying:
At JP2 Radio, we look forward to working alongside Bishop-Elect Pham in our shared mission of evangelization and service. We ask our listeners to keep him in prayer as he begins this new chapter.
