It has been 10 years since critically acclaimed actor Andrew Garfield portrayed a Jesuit priest in Martin Scorsese’s blockbuster movie Silence. It was during the intense research and study of St. Ignatius’ spirituality that the actor talked about “falling in love with Jesus.”
Now, nearly a decade later, as Garfield’s new movie, The Uprising, hits theaters next week, the actor told the Register that “profound encounter” still exists for him.
An Enduring Spiritual Encounter
Noting it is difficult to discuss “because it was very private and personal for me,” Garfield explained, he said, “Yes, it remains.”
“There is a glimmer, there is a connection there that — well, it’s there all the time, whether we’re aware of it or not. The energy of that figure, whether literal, metaphorical or otherwise, symbolizes so much beauty, forgiveness, surrender and empathy.”
“I think that does live as an archetype in all of us,” he continued, “so finding that connection to that figure means finding that connection to that part of ourselves.”
