Since the mid-1990s, Deacon Marcos Lopez and his wife Corina have been crossing the border and doing what most only talk about — entering the garbage dumps of Mexicali and bringing food, clothing, and the love of Christ to families who have nothing. What began as the Lay Brothers of Mother Teresa has grown into the Lay Brothers of the Poor, a Catholic lay nonprofit ministry that has quietly and faithfully served the poorest of the poor in Mexicali and the Imperial Valley for over 30 years.
No fanfare. No headlines. Just love in action.
This Lenten season, they are doing it again — and they are inviting you to come along.
On Saturday, March 21st, join the Lay Brothers beginning at 8:00 AM at the Calexico 10 Theater for a morning of faith and direct service. Together you will celebrate Mass, serve a warm lunch, and deliver groceries — rice, beans, and canned goods — to families who make their living sorting through garbage at the Mexicali Dump.
“Whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40
This is not charity from a distance. This is Lent lived out.
