YOU ARE THE LIGHT of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Mt. 5:14-16)
These are the words of Jesus to His disciples during the Sermon on the Mount and are His instructions to us today as well. When we were baptized, we were given a candle and told, “Receive the light of Christ.” As children of the light, we are called to let God’s love shine through us by keeping the flame of faith alive in our hearts. With this hope, we will meet Christ at the end of our lives with this light burning brightly within us. Our baptism may have been decades ago, but the commission of the baptized remains: are Christ’s light in the world? Do our good deeds glorify God? Good deeds can be as simple as showing kindness to a stranger, forgiving someone who has wronged us, or helping those in
