SAN DIEGO — Cristo Rey San Diego High School held its third annual Draft Day Aug. 5 in the parish hall at St. Jude Shrine of the West.

The event is based on the idea of a sports draft, with students being “drafted” by the corporate and nonprofit partners they will be working with this school year.

Cristo Rey San Diego offers a unique Corporate Work Study Program, in which all students work five days per month in professional, entry-level positions at local companies and nonprofit organizations. With the schedule set so they never miss a class, students earn valuable work experience in a corporate setting while receiving a college-preparatory education.

Corporate partners for the 2022-2023 school year include: American Red Cross, Buchalter, CBRE, Catholic Charities, City of San Diego, Cushman & Wakefield, Diocese of San Diego, Expeditors, Father Joe’s Villages, Groundwork San Diego, Junior Achievement, Latham & Watkins, Lindsay & Brownell, Marsh & McLellan, Nativity Prep Academy, Pacific Western Bank, Precision Diagnostics, Rady Children’s Hospital, Realty Income, Scripps Mercy Hospital, Sheppard Mullan, St. Jude Shrine of the West, St. Paul’s Senior Services, WD-40, and Whiting-Turner Contracting Co.

On Draft Day, all students received sealed envelopes containing their job placements, which
